This is a proposed Century Course in global health at Duke University, aiming for a Fall 2026 launch.

Century Courses at Duke are designed to give students transformative intellectual experiences that help them understand their place in the world and their responsibilities as engaged citizens. These courses are taught by Duke's most accomplished faculty and emphasize critical thinking, collaborative learning, and the integration of knowledge across disciplines.

Course Vision

The Air Between Us embodies the Century Course mission by using tuberculosis as a lens to explore fundamental questions about health, inequality, and justice that transcend disciplinary boundaries. Students will develop critical thinking skills while engaging with complex global challenges that require both scientific understanding and humanistic insight.

Through this course, students will learn to think across disciplines, work collaboratively in diverse teams, and develop the analytical and ethical frameworks needed to address complex challenges in our interconnected world.

Global Health at Duke

The Duke Global Health Institute is a university-wide institute that brings together faculty, students, and practitioners from across Duke to address the world's most pressing health challenges. DGHI's approach emphasizes interdisciplinary collaboration, community engagement, and the development of sustainable solutions to improve health outcomes for vulnerable populations worldwide.

This proposed course aligns with DGHI's mission by providing students with the tools to understand health as a product of complex social, political, and environmental systems, while preparing them to become thoughtful leaders in global health and beyond.
